With their diverse terrain, Green River and Rock Springs offer a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. From exciting water sports and hikes along the famous Green River to the thrills of mountain biking the Mustang Loop Trail or sandboarding at Killpecker Sand Dunes, there is an invigorating experience to suit everyone’s preferences.
With its imposing rock formations, dramatic gorges and tranquil waters, this area is a place that you have to see to believe. Enjoy the view and let someone else do the driving on a guided scenic tour of Flaming Gorge (June through September). Or, take a day drive to witness these unforgettable vistas on one of our scenic byways, including the Bridger Valley Historic Byway which intersects with many historic pioneer trails mentioned below.
Wyoming has a deeply rich history, especially in southwest Wyoming, where thousands of pioneers passed through on their journey toward a better life in the West. Relive their experiences and walk in their footsteps down one of the area’s many miles of still-visible pioneer trails — the most of any area in the United States.
Stop at stage stations less than an hour north and west of Green River along the old Pony Express Route, including the Granger Stage Station Historic Site in Granger and the Green River Pony Express Station near the Lombard Ferry, which itself was a popular river-crossing point for many trails. Witness one of the crossroads of the pioneer trails, including the Mormon Trail, California Trail, Oregon Trail and Cherokee or Trappers’ Trail, at the Fort Bridger State Historical Site. Hear the tales of the daring souls who settled in these wild lands at Rock Springs and Green River’s historic museums.
